I define myself as a landscape-based artist whose roots are deeply buried in Saskatchewan soil. This has been my primary theme for over two decades and continues to challenge and inspire me. I have tried to depict the vastness and expansiveness of the prairie panorama – its huge ever-moving skies, the beauty of a benign summer day, the crisp chill of winter and its terrible beauty. Over the years I have come to create my own basic fabrics starting with
unbleached cotton and using Setacolor fabric paints, although I do not
hesitate to use a wide range of other materials, such as antique satin,
chiffons, satins – whatever will give me the effect I am trying
to achieve. The works are primarily done in raw-edge appliqué using
extensive free-motion machine stitching and colored pencils to integrate
and blend the various materials into a cohesive image. I have worked to
achieve a rich, complex surface texture using a variety of fabrics and
threads and then further enhanced these with the quilted surface. . |
