This is a practical, hardworking workshop in which you will make a series of samplers and explore several different approaches to machine applique. These will include basic applique techniques, use of adhesives, nets, couching techniques, and a variety of methods of edge finishing. This course will cover traditional techniques as well as more contemporary methods using free-motion machine stitching and adhesives. It will greatly broaden your options when using applique to enhance your sewing on garments, quilts, or contemporary wall hangings. LENGTH: 2-3 days MATERIALS FEE: For 2-day workshop - $12.00 Click here for Supply List/Classroom Needs Sewing From Nature 1 Nature provides us with an unending source of inspiration through an examination of all Her small treasures, such as flowers, pinecones and seashells. Focusing primarily on flowers and foliage, we will combine introductory drawing exercises with free-motion machine stitching to create a series of sewn drawings on canvas and unbleached cotton. We will “add a bit of color” by working on colored fabrics, using multiple colors of threads and using colored pencils for some additional shading options. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned some of the basic drawing skills, had some FUN stretching and exploring new ways of working and seeing and have a series of small sewn drawings. Level: Some knowledge of free-motion machine embroidery is necessary

Focusing primarily on flowers and foliage, we will combine introductory drawing exercises with free-motion machine stitching to create a series of sewn drawings on canvas and unbleached cotton. We will then build on the skills of the first 3 days by exploring border and quilting options while we convert our drawings into small individual finished pieces as well as investigate ways to mount them in combination with each other for larger works. Using photographs and a combination of mottled fabrics, coloured pencils, free-motion machine appliqué and quilting techniques, participants will translate that beauty into realistic fabric images. Various approaches and composition options will be explored and each participant will end up with a completely original fibre work. The longer the workshop, the more opportunity participants have to complete their artworks. Remember, “flower” can be a verb. Flower !!! Length: 3-5 days |
